Joanne M Jensen, DDS, MS

Dr. Joanne Jensen has been practicing endodontics in Contra Costa County for over ten years. She was born in Palo Alto and grew up in Santa Cruz, CA, graduating from Santa Catalina High School for Girls. She then went onto UC Berkeley for her undergraduate education, majoring in Biochemistry. While at UC Berkeley, Dr. Jensen interned for Chiron Corporation in the Research and Development department. From there, she moved onto undergraduate research at a lab at UC Berkeley, under Prof. Jack Kirsch’s direction. Upon graduation, Dr. Jensen was hired at Genencor International, a company that specialized in industrial enzyme development. She worked there for several years, developing several patented techniques which were used to help develop Tide Ultra II. It was at Genecor that Dr. Jensen realized she wanted to pursue a career that had a strong science basis as well as a strong health care component.

In 1999, she began her journey into the dental profession by enrolling in the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. After graduating in 2002 as a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society (the Phi Beta Kappa of Dentistry), Dr. Jensen completed a general practice residency at The Ohio State University. There, Dr. Jensen gained valuable experience in medically compromised patients as well as continuing to focus on all aspects of general dentistry.

Dr. Jensen quickly realized that endodontics was her passion and entered the endodontic specialty program at The Ohio State University. She earned an endodontic certificate and her Masters of Science in Oral Biology in 2005. The endodontic program at Ohio State takes pride in being the leader in pain management and local anesthetic research. Her master’s thesis project involved evaluating the anesthetic efficacy of an intraosseous injection using a new innovative delivery system. She ultimately published her research in the Journal of Endodontics. Dr. Jensen’s thesis project enabled her to gain extensive experience in local anesthesia administration and pain management. Dr. Jensen has also taken continuing education courses that focus on oral sedation. She feels that it is paramount to her practice of endodontics to be able to provide many methods for anxiety relief during treatment. Attending study groups and scientific conferences, Dr. Jensen actively strives to stay on the cutting edge of endodontic care. Dr. Jensen achieved the highest distinction possible in endodontics in 2015 when she became Board Certified in Endodontics. She is currently a Diplomate of the American College of Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics.

Dr. Jensen has been living in Moraga with her husband, Derek, and three young children, Peter, Evan and Adelyn, for the past ten years. She is very active in the St. Perpetua catholic community, helping coach her childrens’ many athletic teams, and giving back to our dental community. Dr. Jensen’s hobbies consist of her three children.
